Fear, breathing and technique

Transcending fear of the ocean through breathing and technique and how that brings a return of confidence and capability…. I stood looking out across the Atlantic Ocean toward the horizon. Why 'Endurance Horizon Cafe'

The short answer is for the love of running in the mountains, cycling the leafy lanes and hills, swimming in rivers and ocean, exploring new places and testing myself - my endurance horizons....the cafe part is about sharing that with others.

But in a bit more detail...In 2018 and already over fifty, I was obese, ill and unable to walk more than 100m. I had been for 10 years. I set out on a journey to change things. At first I could barely imagine walking out the door - my horizons were very limited - mentally and physically. I worked out in the kitchen, changed my diet, did yoga and tai chi, rode a bike a few km then more and more, swam a bit and more and more, got injured and recovered, started to run 1, 5, 10km. As time has passed I realised the only limit to what I could do was just that, what I could imagine. By learning from others about eating properly, training both my body and mind, how my body works, what happens where and just getting out and doing things, I was able to imagine new possibilities and adventures. In this way I could expand my horizon. I have now completed endurance triathlons, ultra marathons, long distance swims I have had many adventure in the UK and abroad but he most important ones are understanding my body and mind, being in my environment and in some way a spiritual journey too. I have learned a lot about the world and myself on the way. It is as if I began to climb a mountain and with each step, sometimes easy sometimes hard, I could see further and imagine more possibilities.

This site celebrates the who, what, where, how and why of my journey and others like it. It includes things I have written and selected from the work and experience of other people.

I hope you like it.
